How to create a poll in Slack
Six steps, about three minutes, no workspace admin needed after CleanPoll is installed.
CleanPoll lets anyone in a Slack workspace publish a poll without leaving the channel they're already in. Here's the full process, from installing the app to exporting the final results.
-
Install CleanPoll to your Slack workspace
Add CleanPoll from cleanpoll.com or the Slack App Directory. You approve the requested permissions once, and the app becomes available to everyone in the workspace right away.
-
Open the "Create poll" modal
Use the
/cleanpollcommand in any channel, the "Create poll" message shortcut, or the global shortcut from the lightning bolt menu next to the message box. -
Write your question and add options
Type the question and list the answer options, or start from a ready-made template for date polls, prioritization, or team pulse checks to skip the blank page.
-
Configure the voting settings
Choose single or multi-vote, anonymous or public responses, whether teammates can add missing options after publishing, and an optional auto-close time.
-
Preview and publish
Review the preview exactly as it will appear, then publish the poll to a channel, a direct message, or a group DM.
-
Collect votes, close, and export
Watch results update in real time, close the poll manually or let auto-close handle it, then download the results as a CSV file whenever you need to share them.
That's the whole flow — see every setting in detail on the Features section, or install the app to try it in your own workspace.
Questions
Poll creation FAQ.
How do I start a poll in Slack?
Install CleanPoll to your workspace, then run /cleanpoll in any channel, use
the "Create poll" message shortcut, or open it from the shortcuts menu.
Can I edit a poll after it's published?
You can add missing options after publishing if that setting is enabled. The question and existing options are locked once the poll is live, so double-check them in the preview step before publishing.
Can people vote for more than one option?
Yes, if you turn on multi-vote when configuring the poll. You can also cap how many options each person may choose, or leave it as a single-vote poll.
How do I make a poll anonymous?
Turn on anonymous responses in the poll settings before publishing. Individual votes stay hidden while totals still update for everyone.
Can a poll close automatically?
Yes. Set an auto-close time when creating the poll and CleanPoll will close it and post the final results for you.
How do I export the results?
Open the poll's results and download them as a CSV file at any time, before or after it closes.
Does Slack have a built-in poll feature?
No, Slack doesn't ship a native poll feature. You need an app like CleanPoll installed to
create one, then you publish it with the /cleanpoll command or the "Create
poll" shortcut.
Can I create a poll in a Slack DM or group chat, not just a channel?
Yes. When you publish a poll, you can send it to a channel, a direct message, or a group DM — the same modal and settings apply everywhere.
Is a Slack vote the same as a Slack poll?
Yes, people use "vote" and "poll" interchangeably in Slack. A CleanPoll poll is how teammates cast their vote: everyone picks an option and the tally updates in real time.
Is there a slash command syntax to remember for Slack polls?
No syntax to memorize. Typing /cleanpoll opens a guided modal where you fill
in the question, options, and settings, instead of formatting a command by hand.
